the significance of our name

Why the Name "The Remix"!?

“Re” is a Latin prefix meaning "again" or "back". It was created to help us understand that things may not always be right the first time. Also, even when things are good; life can always shift towards amazing! Like the remix of a song, Remix encourages us that in order to create change, we do not need to start from scratch. We can begin where we are, with what we have; with minor tweaks…every aspect of our lives can be Remixed.

Mental Health programs and services in general ought to be Remixed. Within the physical health arena, there are a plethora of wellness and nutrition treatments and education programs. However, there are only a few healthcare regimens that people thoroughly enjoy. Pleasure in healthcare is important if we want to be consistent and achieve their treatment goals. The same must be true for mental health. Let’s be honest, traditional Western mental health treatment options can be disenchanting.

Motivating people to begin is an arduous process; maintaining engagement is also taxing. That is not considering the actual therapeutic work that needs to be done to achieve goals. To truly meet the needs of clients and communities; mental health as a system must be remixed. Mental health clinicians and organizations must shift towards means that are innovative, inspiring, culturally relevant and diverse so clients want to learn and stay engaged. We want to be different; and incorporate ways to make mental health enjoyable.

Welcome to The Remix!

Why should I care about my mental health?

Mental health is at our core. It impacts everything we think, feel and do. There is a correlation between the mind and body; everything is connected. Mental, physical and spiritual experiences are all intertwined.

It is important to ensure overall health and wellness by beginning with our minds.

Prevention is the best policy. For physical health we brush our teeth to prevent disease; we visit doctors routinely for checkups. The same must be done for mental health. Engaging in therapy for a wellness checks are extremely important. Implementing coping strategies to alleviate stress. Maintaining a self-care regime to prevent burnout. Speaking with mental health professionals to process triggers. These are all necessary for optimal health. Are you practicing mental health hygiene?

What is therapy?

Therapy is a goal-oriented, high-value, scientifically proven process that teaches you how your mind works. It helps you relate and make changes to your thoughts, navigate your feelings, and recognize patterns in your behaviors to overcome emotional and behavioral challenges.

Therapy is a collaborative process. The therapist is not the expert of your life, you are! Effective therapy blends the therapist's training and expertise with the client's expertise of their life to help the client reach their goals and live a meaningful life.

Therapy provides a safe space; a judgement free zone to gain clarity, build emotional intelligence and resilience. Our therapists practice evidence-based techniques designed to be shorter-term treatment methods. You should start seeing progress after just a handful of visits with your therapist. Effective therapy has an end date. Therapy can be temporary because it teaches you skills and tools that last forever.

What is the role of a therapist?

A therapist is like a coach–a coach for your mind. Like a personal trainer, a professional therapist creates an effective training program for your mind that is designed just for you, with your specific goals in mind.

Professionally licensed therapists are experts in how humans process thoughts and emotions. Your therapist spends time in session to listen for patterns to figure out what’s working, what’s not, and come up with a plan that will help you make positive changes. You’ll learn valuable insights about how your mind works in session and gain skills that will help you make it work better.

You don't get abs just through dedication at the gym; but by changing activities in your everyday life. The same is true for mental health. Change comes not just from going to therapy, but also from spending time practicing the skills that you learn in session.

What is telehealth/teletherapy/virtual therapy?

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines telehealth as health care services that use real-time, two-way telecommunications and virtual technology to deliver health care outside of traditional health care facilities.

Teletherapy is providing therapy via live video connection using the internet. Telehealth provides quality of care that is on par with traditional in-person services. With virtual therapy, you are no longer constrained by your physical location; the goal is to make mental health services more accessible and convenient.

We use the HIPPA compliant platform doxy.me for our services.

What is a Coach/Coaching session?

Coaches work with their clients to reach specific life goals (i.e. finding a new job). There is no focus on emotional challenges or difficulties.

Goals set within a coaching session are measurable and results are visible and tangible (i.e. updating a resume). Coaches focus on goal achievement; focus in on effective action.

Coaching typically focuses on the client's strengths, specific outcomes, helps clients learn skills to reach their full potential. There is no diagnosing or focus on mental health issues in coaching. It is is important to remember that the coaching field is not regulated by any rules, regulations, or governing bodies. Secondly, coaching is NOT reimbursable by insurance. Also, coaching is NOT appropriate for help for mental health issues and diagnoses.

Coaches are open to disclose personal information and share their own experiences. Coaches have an eclectic knowledge base and draw from classroom education, their expertise in the field and lifelong learning.

These are niche topics can be explored within coaching sessions with clients:
• Developing Your Authentic Self
• Occupational Wellness & Goal Setting
• Intellectual Wellness & Goals Setting
• Finding Your Partnerships & Networks
• Financial Wellness & Budgeting
• Entrepreneurship

What is a Therapy/Counseling session?

Counselors (or therapists) work with their clients to overcome emotional or behavioral challenges or concerns (i.e. stress/anxiety at work).

Therapy focuses more on underlying mental health issues and understanding why that change is necessary. Therapy typically involves past understanding of issues and focuses on evidence-based assessments, interventions, and treatments to address those issues.

Goals set within a counseling session may not be obvious because the goals are focused on internal change (i.e. exploring feelings of guilt associated with setting time boundaries around work tasks at home) and rely on the report of the client to determine improvement.

Counselors rarely disclose personal information; only if it can advance the client’s healing process. Counselors have a Master’s degree and Mental Health license in the state they are practicing.

These are niche topics can be explored within our sessions with clients:

• Positive Body Image & Self-Love
• Forgiveness (Of Self & Others)
• Spiritual Wellness
• Relationships & Boundary Setting
• Anger & Stress Expression & Exploration
